Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 with funds donated by Johns Hopkins, who directed the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The present-day Homewood campus was laid out in the early 1900s. Much of its neo-Colonial architecture dates from that period, alongside buildings from earlier decades.

Gilman Hall stands on the main quad. Built in 1904, it was named for Daniel Coit Gilman, the university’s first president. The campus is home to undergraduates and also draws visitors interested in its architecture and museums.
