Hopi Point

Hopi Point is a South Rim overlook on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park, west of Grand Canyon Village.

Hopi Point is a South Rim overlook on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park, west of Grand Canyon Village. Its rocky projection reaches farther into the canyon than the other Hermit Road viewpoints, opening broad views east and west across the formations and the Colorado River. The changing light makes it a rewarding stop at sunrise as well as sunset, when the canyon walls shift in color. It is a popular place to watch the sun go down, so expect to share the outlook with other visitors.

A viewpoint on Hermit Road

Hopi Point sits along Hermit Road, west of Grand Canyon Village, among a series of South Rim overlooks. The point extends into the canyon farther than the other viewpoints on the road. That position gives the outlook a broad sweep across the landscape, with views in both directions and the Colorado River visible below.

The river can appear as a narrow line from the rim, but it is a substantial feature of the view. Dana Butte and other rock formations help give the canyon its layered profile. The outlook has a fenced viewing area beside the road; the wider panorama comes from its position on the projecting point.

Getting there by shuttle or trail

During the season when private cars are barred from Hermit Road, the free red shuttle route serves Hopi Point. It is the fourth stop on the route. The shuttle also connects the overlook with other viewpoints along the road, including Powell Point and Mohave Point.

The Rim Trail is another way to reach the area. One route description gives the hike as 2.5 miles, though the starting point is not specified. The trail continues past other overlooks, so you can make the visit part of a longer walk rather than treating Hopi Point as an isolated stop. Winter access by car is possible, but ice and snow can affect the road and occasionally lead to closures.

Light across the canyon

The west-facing outlook is known for sunset, when the sun drops behind the canyon rim and light moves across the rock formations. The view also opens eastward, so you can watch the changing colors and shadows spread across more than one section of the canyon. Sunrise is another option: cooler light and blue shadows bring out different details along the rim.

Because sunset draws a crowd, plan to arrive early if you want to choose your place to watch. You can also stay after the sun disappears to see the afterglow on the canyon walls. If the main viewing area feels busy, other overlooks on Hermit Road provide alternatives, including Mohave and Pima points.
