Palmisano Park is a 26-acre park in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, built on the site of Stearns Quarry and a former landfill. Walk paved paths and boardwalks from prairie grasses and wetlands to a pond in the old quarry, then climb the hill for views of the Chicago skyline. The changing levels, preserved quarry walls and pockets of wildlife give the park a different feel from a flat city green space. Bring a kite for the open meadow or make time for a quiet picnic by the water.
From Stearns Quarry to a neighborhood park

The park occupies the site of Stearns Quarry, where limestone was once extracted. The quarry later became a landfill before the city turned the land into a park that opened in 2009. Its former uses are still legible in the terrain: a high hill rises above ground level, while the old quarry basin now holds a pond.
The site has a much older geological past, too. The area was once part of an ancient coral reef, around 400 million years ago. Preserved quarry walls and the park’s steep changes in elevation offer a glimpse of that layered history alongside its newer wetlands and paths.
Paths, wetlands and the quarry pond

Walking routes cross several kinds of ground, including paved paths, boardwalks made from recycled timber, crushed-stone running paths and metal-grating walkways. Prairie grasses and wildflowers line parts of the route. The paths lead toward the quarry pond and its surrounding wetland, where ducks and geese are often seen.
The pond has fishing piers, and catch-and-release fishing is possible. Algae can affect how clearly you can see fish in the water. The park also has a stream, waterfalls, limestone cliffs and a water bell, alongside recreational areas such as an athletic field, running track and sports courts.
Climb the hill for the skyline
The hill, known locally as Mount Bridgeport, is the park’s high point and gives views across Chicago’s skyline. From there, the landscape drops back toward the lower quarry and wetlands, so a walk through the park includes both an elevated city outlook and quieter paths beside the water.
The open meadow suits kite flying, and the hills are used for sledding in winter. Families can also find small climbing features for children. For a slower visit, take a walk through the park or bring a picnic; the paths and sitting areas make it easy to pause between the hill and the pond.
