At 410 S Michigan Ave, the Fine Arts Building brings together artists’ studios, theaters and historic public spaces. The building was converted from a carriage and wagon display site into studios and theaters in 1898. Look for the murals on the 10th floor, which have remained largely unchanged since that remodel, and take a ride in the manually operated elevator. Artists work in fields from puppetry and glass paperweight making to instrument repair. On First and Second Fridays, more studios and galleries open to the public.

Fine Arts Building

The Fine Arts Building was first made for assembling and displaying carriages and wagons. In 1898, it was converted into studios and theaters for artists. Its public spaces retain much of the character of that remodel, including murals on the 10th floor.

The building remains a place of work for artists and makers. Studios cover a range of practices, from puppetry and glass paperweight making to violin repair and dance instruction.

A visit can include the building’s historic interiors, its murals and a ride in the manually operated elevator. The studios are working spaces, so ask before photographing artists or their work, and take care in smaller shops.

On the first and second Fridays of the month, more studios and galleries open to the public. That timing gives you a chance to see a wider range of work and speak with artists about their crafts.
