Sungnyemun was built in 1398, during the Joseon Dynasty. Also known as Namdaemun, it was one of the gates through which people could enter or leave the walled city. It is the best-known of the eight gates associated with Seoul’s fortress wall and is designated South Korea’s National Treasure No. 1.

The structure brings together a substantial stone base and a traditional wooden pavilion above it. Pause to study the roof and painted ceiling details, which are easy to miss if you only stop for a quick photograph.
