Heunginjimun Gate, better known as Dongdaemun, is a historic eastern gate in Seoul’s old fortress wall, at 288 Jong-ro in the Dongdaemun district. Its tiled roof, curved eaves and carved details stand out against the modern buildings nearby. You can view the gate from outside and read the historical plaques around it; entry is not possible. Come after dark to see it illuminated, or pair the stop with Naksan Park and the nearby stretch of old city wall.
A gate in Seoul’s old fortress wall

Heunginjimun was one of eight gates in Seoul’s fortress wall and stood on the eastern side of the wall. It was built to protect Hanseongbu, the government facilities of historic Seoul. The gate is also known as Dongdaemun, meaning East Gate, and is a designated national treasure.
Look closely at the layered roof tiles, tapering eaves and carved details. The gate’s traditional form is especially clear against the surrounding modern buildings. Historical plaques nearby provide more context; the structure itself is not open for entry.
Connecting the visit with the city wall
The City Wall trail lies to the north of the gate, and Naksan Park is another nearby stop. These make a natural pairing if you want to see more of the old wall after viewing Heunginjimun. To reach the gate from Exit 9, head east and cross the street.
