On Castlehill beside Edinburgh Castle, The Scotch Whisky Experience introduces you to whisky through interactive exhibits, a guided tour and a tasting. A ride inside a giant cask follows the production process, then multimedia displays explain how Scotland’s whisky regions and flavours differ. The visit also includes a look at the large Claive Vidiz collection of Scotch whisky bottles. You don’t need to know your single malt from your blend to follow along: guides explain the tasting, and tour options include different numbers of whiskies. Choose a longer tasting if you want more time with the drams.

A guided introduction to Scotch

The Scotch Whisky Experience
The Scotch Whisky Experience

The Scotch Whisky Experience is an attraction on Castlehill, beside Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. It is not a working distillery. Instead, its tour uses exhibits, storytelling and a tasting to explain how Scotch whisky is made and how its flavour changes across Scotland’s whisky-producing regions.

The experience is designed for newcomers as well as people who already know whisky. Guides explain the production process and help make sense of the tasting. If you are curious about Scotch but unsure what you like, the regional styles give you a starting point for comparing aromas and flavours.

From cask ride to whisky vault

The tour begins with a ride inside a large whisky cask. The journey introduces the production process, from barley through the stages of making whisky, with multimedia elements adding images, sound and animation. A later presentation takes you through Scotland’s whisky regions and the characteristics associated with them.

The visit also covers blending and includes a look at the Claive Vidiz collection, a major display of Scotch whisky bottles housed in a vault. The scale of the collection is part of the appeal even if you are more interested in the history than in tasting. Photography and video are permitted during the visit, including in the vault.

Choosing a tour and tasting

Tour options vary in how many whiskies they include. The Silver Tour is a shorter introduction with one dram; other options provide more extensive tastings. Check the current tour details before booking if comparing several whiskies is important to you, since the number of tastings and available time slots differ.

At the end, a guide explains the whisky you are tasting. Some tours include a tasting glass to take home, and additional whiskies may be available to buy at the end of the tour. If you would like to continue exploring, the adjacent Amber Restaurant serves Scottish food with whisky pairings, and the whisky bar has a broad selection of drams.
