The Hermitage of Braid covers around thirty acres of mature woodland. The Braid Burn runs through the park on its course from the Pentland Hills towards Portobello. Shaded paths follow the wooded ground, with meadows and wetland areas adding variety to a walk.

There are several paths to explore, so you can choose a short wander or spend longer moving through the parklands. In spring, bluebells grow among the trees. The reserve is also a place to watch for birds, including herons and dippers; other wildlife recorded here includes little grebes, buzzards, swans, toads and wood mice.

Historic features in the park

The woodland contains remnants of earlier use, including an ice house, old iron fences and a dovecote. The Hermitage House is the historic house that gave the area its name. A visitor centre is associated with the house, and the site also includes a walled garden.

Blackford Hill became a public park after Edinburgh Corporation purchased it in 1884. The Hermitage of Braid was added to the parklands in 1938. Together, the woodland and hill provide paths through both natural and historic parts of the area.

Planning your walk

The Lodge Coffee House is by the entrance and provides a place to pick up a coffee or hot chocolate before setting off. There are no public toilets within the park, so bring water and make any necessary stops before you begin.

Dogs are welcome on the paths but should be kept on leads. Early mornings and weekdays are suggested for a quieter visit. Allow time to explore more than one path if you want to see the woodland, stream and historic features.
