TAKAO 599 MUSEUM

At the foot of Mount Takao in Hachioji, TAKAО 599 MUSEUM introduces the mountain’s plants, insects and animals through well-organized displays in a bright, modern space. Stop in before a hike to learn what lives along the trails, or come back afterward to look more closely at the local ecology. Displays include insect and plant specimens, local wildlife and a short film shown at intervals. General admission is free, and there is a cafe inside for a coffee and a rest.

A museum about Mount Takao

TAKAO 599 MUSEUM opened in August 2015 with the aim of sharing Mount Takao’s ecology, history and culture. Its name refers to the mountain’s height, and the exhibits focus on the natural life found there. The museum also encourages visitors to think about how the mountain might change over the next 50 to 100 years.

The displays cover the mountain’s plants, insects and animals. Seasonal flower and insect samples are set in acrylic, and information panels introduce local wildlife, including boars and tanuki. A wall presents animals found in the area. The museum’s name also points to the 599 plant species documented on Mount Takao.

Film, cafe and shop

A short film about the area plays at intervals, with a presentation reported to begin on the hour. The exhibits are arranged for easy viewing, and the open, sunlit interior has seating where you can rest.

There is a cafe inside the museum, as well as a small shop with museum goods. The museum also runs events and lectures, so check its schedule if you would like to plan your visit around one.
