Sasuke Inari Shrine is a small Shinto shrine in a wooded part of Kamakura, near Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine. Red torii gates climb the hillside towards the shrine buildings, with fox figures and small stone shrines scattered along the way. Inari’s foxes are regarded as messengers, and local tradition links the shrine to Minamoto no Yoritomo and the founding of the Kamakura shogunate. The uphill approach takes effort, but the quiet grounds offer a calmer stop than Kamakura’s busier sights.

The path through the torii gates

The approach climbs a wooded hillside beneath rows of red torii gates. Fox figures and small stone shrines appear along the route, giving the compact shrine grounds a distinctive character. The uphill walk includes many steps, so enter from the main approach at the bottom rather than trying to reach the shrine from the top of the hill.

Inari shrines are dedicated to Inari, associated with crops and prosperity. Foxes are regarded as the deity’s messengers, which explains the many fox figures here. Take time to look around the hillside as well as at the main building; the grounds are spread across the slope.

Yoritomo and the shrine’s name

Local tradition tells of Minamoto no Yoritomo seeing an old man in a dream while he was exiled in Izu. The man identified himself as Inari of Kamakura’s Hidden Village and urged Yoritomo to raise an army. After establishing the shogunate, Yoritomo is said to have found and rebuilt a small shrine in Sasukegaya in gratitude.

The shrine’s name is associated with the idea of a helping Inari. It is also known by names connected with success and good fortune, reflecting the story of Yoritomo’s rise. The legend gives context to a visit, but the hillside path and fox imagery are the most visible parts of the grounds.

Adding Sasuke Inari to a Kamakura walk

Sasuke Inari is close to Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine, making the two a practical pairing for a walk. The shrine is away from Kamakura’s main tourist spots, and the wooded setting can feel especially quiet when few people are around. A small counter sells amulets and goshuin. Visitors can also find ema for wishes, including ones for pets.
