Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

Miraikan, the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, is in Odaiba, Tokyo.

Miraikan, the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, is in Odaiba, Tokyo. Its exhibits connect science to everyday life, the planet and space, with hands-on displays about robotics, AI, the environment and human biology. Look up at Geo-Cosmos, a suspended globe that displays satellite images of Earth, then explore the full-scale International Space Station model, real rocket engines and humanoid robots. English explanations are available throughout. Allow at least three hours if you want time to explore the exhibits and attend a demonstration or dome-theatre screening.

Miraikan’s Geo-Cosmos hangs above the entrance atrium. Its surface uses more than 10,000 OLED panels to display images of Earth, including satellite views of clouds and changing weather patterns. Other displays have shown cities and population, as well as human migration. Take time to look at the globe from different points in the atrium, then visit the exhibits that explore how people interact with the planet.

The permanent exhibitions are grouped around three themes: the built environment, information and the natural world. Together, they link large questions about Earth and society with technologies and scientific ideas that shape daily life.

Robots, space and hands-on science

The robot area includes humanoid robots such as ASIMO, ALTER and OTONAROIDO. Demonstrations and interactive encounters invite visitors to consider how people might live alongside robots, and what makes something seem alive or human. The museum also explores AI and assistive technology.

For space exploration, step inside a full-scale model of part of the International Space Station and see real rocket engines. Other exhibits cover the universe, life and the global environment. There is also a full-scale model of the Shinkai 6500, a crewed research submersible used to explore the deep ocean. Hands-on displays make room for trying ideas out, not only reading explanations.

The dome theatre and visiting with children

The Gaia dome theatre screens programmes on a large, dome-shaped screen. Some screenings focus on space, including a documentary filmed inside the International Space Station with a 360-degree camera. An English audio option is available. The theatre is popular, so check its programme and book ahead if a particular screening matters to your visit.

Children can explore the Curiosity Field, an area with interactive activities designed to encourage discovery. Exhibits range from accessible hands-on experiences to topics that may hold more interest for older children and adults. English explanations appear throughout the museum, and staff can help with interactive devices.

Planning time for Miraikan

The museum is spacious, and exploring its exhibits can take several hours. Set aside at least three hours, especially if you plan to see a demonstration or theatre programme. Going early or on a weekday can help you avoid queues at popular activities.

There is a café for a break during your visit. Its menu has included dishes made with NEXT soy meat, though the selection and availability can change. Miraikan also has a shop with science-related goods, including experiment kits.
