Musei di Villa Torlonia is a group of museums in the Torlonia family’s former Neoclassical villa and grounds on Via Nomentana in Rome.

Musei di Villa Torlonia is a group of museums in the Torlonia family’s former Neoclassical villa and grounds on Via Nomentana in Rome. In the main building, Cassino Nobile, look for the decorated stucco interiors and an exhibition of work by the Roman School on the top floor. The park adds two distinctive stops, the stained-glass-filled Casina delle Civette and Serra Moresca. You can also book a timed visit to Benito Mussolini’s former residence and the air-raid shelters beneath the villa, which connect the site to Rome’s wartime history.

Inside Cassino Nobile

Cassino Nobile is the main building in the museum complex. The Torlonia family had the Neoclassical mansion built in the early 19th century. Its interiors are decorated with stucco and richly finished details. The exterior is currently undergoing renovation and is covered with scaffolding and protective cloth.

The top floor houses an exhibition of work by the Roman School. The villa’s separate museums can be visited with a combined ticket, which covers the museums in the complex; individual entry is also available.

The villa during the Second World War

From 1925 to 1943, the villa was Benito Mussolini’s official residence. Air-raid shelters were built beneath the property, and a bunker visit gives access to this part of the site’s history. Visits take place on Saturdays and Sundays and require a specific time slot. You can book online or at the villa; arrange this before you arrive, as the remaining times may not suit your plans.

Architecture in the park

The grounds contain several distinct buildings, including Casina delle Civette and Serra Moresca. Casina delle Civette is noted for its stained glass, which catches the light in the morning. Serra Moresca adds another stop for visitors interested in the villa’s varied architecture. Leave time to explore the park as well as the museums inside the main mansion.
