The Colosseum, at Piazza del Colosseo in central Rome, is the ancient Flavian Amphitheatre, an enormous oval arena built for public spectacles. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian in AD 72, and his son Titus completed it in AD 80. Inside, you can look across the arena and down toward the underground passages where gladiators, animals and workers moved before appearing in front of the crowd. The arches and surviving tiers give a sense of the building’s scale, even in its ruined state.
