Inside Porta San Sebastiano, Museo delle Mura traces the history of Rome’s fortifications through displays and a walk inside the Aurelian Walls. The route takes you through the gatehouse and along part of the walls, with a bridge above the gate giving views over the park. Panels, photographs and models explain how the defences changed from ancient times through the medieval and modern periods. Entry is free. The museum is near the beginning of the Appian Way, so it fits well with a visit to the area.

A museum inside Porta San Sebastiano

Museo delle Mura occupies Porta San Sebastiano, one of the largest and best-preserved gates in Rome’s Aurelian Walls. The gate was first known as Porta Appia, marking the route out of the city toward the Appian Way. The museum’s displays are arranged across the gate’s upper floors, where panels, photographs and models explain the development of Rome’s defences.

The story spans ancient, medieval and modern periods. It includes the Republican fortifications and the walls built under Aurelian in the third century AD. Construction of the Aurelian Walls took place between 271 and 275 AD. The route through the museum gives context for the masonry around you, while the preserved gatehouse shows how the walls formed part of the city’s entrances.

Walkways above and within the walls

Part of the visit takes place inside the wall itself. You can walk through the gatehouse and continue along a stretch of the fortifications, seeing the structure from within as well as from the restored parapets. A bridge above the gate crosses the road and looks out toward the park. The tower is closed for renovation, so the bridge is the available elevated viewpoint described for visitors.

The gate has been rebuilt several times over its history. Displays use drawings, photographs and scale models to help explain the changes and the building techniques behind Rome’s defensive walls. The museum’s layout was inaugurated in 1990. Its location at the start of the Appian Way also makes it a useful point to include when exploring the nearby historic route.
