On Via Appia Antica, the Basilica of St Sebastian Outside the Walls is a church with Baroque decoration, sculptures and a chapel holding relics associated with St Sebastian. It was one of Rome’s seven pilgrimage churches and stands above the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian. Inside, look for Bernini’s final sculpture, Salvator Mundi, as well as busts of Saints Peter and Paul. The basilica is outside the city walls and away from central Rome’s main sights, so plan transport to reach it.

A basilica on Via Appia Antica

The Basilica of St Sebastian Outside the Walls stands on Via Appia Antica, beside the catacombs associated with the site. Its original church dates to the 4th century and was built at a catacomb location. The basilica became one of Rome’s seven pilgrimage churches, a historic role that placed it on a route of religious significance beyond the city’s central churches.

The church’s interior took its present form over several periods. A major reconstruction began in 1608 under architect Flaminio Ponzio. Later additions include the chapel above St Sebastian’s tomb, built in the 17th century, and the wooden ceiling, which dates to the 18th century. The 17th-century Baroque facade is also worth a closer look before you enter.

Relics and sculpture inside

The chapel to the left of the nave holds relics of St Sebastian. The basilica also preserves relics associated with Saints Peter, Paul and Andrew, as well as an object identified as the footprints of Jesus. Busts of Saints Peter and Paul are among the works to look for inside.

Bernini’s Salvator Mundi is another notable sculpture in the church. Created in 1679, it was his final sculpture. The basilica’s Baroque decoration, frescoes and sculptures give the interior much to examine beyond its religious relics.

The catacombs and practical details

The Catacombs of Saint Sebastian lie beneath the basilica and add an underground dimension to a visit. Photography is permitted in the church but not in the tombs. If enclosed spaces are uncomfortable for you, consider that before joining a catacomb visit.

The basilica is some distance from central Rome’s main sightseeing areas. Buses 118 and 218 stop relatively close, and a taxi is another way to reach it. The surrounding Via Appia Antica area has other catacombs, so you can plan the basilica as part of a wider visit to the historic road.
