Sea Life Konstanz is an aquarium on the harbour in Konstanz, Germany, with more than 3500 animals in over 35 displays. The main draw is a glass tunnel where sharks, rays and sea turtles swim overhead. The collection covers ocean species alongside the fish of the Rhine and Lake Constance, and a group of gentoo penguins draws the most attention from children. Plan about an hour, and aim for a weekday outside the busiest times.

The glass tunnel and main tanks

The tunnel is the centre of the visit. You walk beneath the water while sharks swim overhead, and rays and sea turtles pass close by.

The rest of the building holds more than 35 displays. Among the animals on show are moon jellyfish, a blue tip reef shark, clownfish, seahorses and turtles. Each area is designed and decorated separately, so the route feels like a series of small underwater scenes rather than one long corridor.

Fish of the Rhine and Lake Constance

Alongside the ocean species, the aquarium presents fish that live in the Rhine and Lake Constance. The river begins in the Swiss Alps and ends at the North Sea near Rotterdam, so the regional tanks cover a long stretch of water.

If you enjoy natural history, the Bodensee Naturmuseum sits at the side entrance. It explains the lake's geological history and its plants and animals, down to the microscopic life in the region.

The penguins and feeding sessions

Ten Antarctic gentoo penguins live in a new home at the aquarium. Feeding sessions are part of the day and add some of the most lively moments to the visit.

Feeding times are not listed here, so check the schedule at the entrance when you arrive.

Visiting with children

Families with young children find the aquarium easy to explore at a relaxed pace. A typical tour takes about an hour.

There is a cafe, a playground on site and a gift shop at the end of the route, so the visit can finish with a snack or a souvenir.

Around the aquarium

Konstanz has more to see in the same half day. The Rosgarten Museum covers local history, and the Münster Unserer Lieben Frau is a cathedral in the old town. The lake is a short walk away, and the Swiss border is close enough to walk to the shore for a snack.

The flower island Mainau is another option for a longer trip from the city.
