Mainau is the third largest island in Lake Constance, known as the Flower Island and reached from Konstanz by a short boat ride. It is a garden island with a baroque palace, an arboretum of old trees, a rose garden, palm plantings and a butterfly house. Tulips bloom in spring, roses in summer and dahlias in autumn, and seasonal exhibitions change the island through the year. Families will also find an adventure playground and a petting zoo. The grounds are large, so plan at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes.

Mainau lies a short distance from Konstanz. You can take a boat across the water, walk over the bridge, or ride bus line 4. Drivers follow Mainaustraße to the island car park, where a day ticket is needed.

The island is the third largest in Lake Constance. It is owned by the Bernadotte family, and the gardens are open to visitors all year.

Gardens through the seasons

The planting changes with the calendar. Thousands of tulips bloom in spring, roses fill the air in summer and dahlias take over in autumn. Mediterranean, subtropical and tropical plants grow here, and the lake climate lets palms and other exotic species do well.

The Italian rose garden is a highlight in summer, when the scent of the roses carries across the beds. Orchids are another strong point of the collection. A fountain, a palm garden and shaded places to sit break up the walk.

The arboretum holds trees around 150 years old, among them giant sequoias. Benches under them make good places to rest.

Butterflies, animals and the lake

The butterfly house is among the most popular stops. Hundreds of exotic butterflies fly freely among the plants. It has a separate fee and a queue at busy times, so go early in your visit or on a quieter day.

Elsewhere on the island you can see carp swimming in the lake and a range of animals, including a petting zoo. Children have an adventure playground and a dinosaur display to explore.

Palace, church and exhibitions

A baroque palace and an Italianate villa stand among the gardens. The Palm House and the Castle Church host exhibitions during the year. Castle tours also take in the palms and the butterfly house from behind the scenes.

The walk along the lake to the castle is one of the best routes on the island.

Planning the day

The island is larger than many first-time visitors expect. Some spend about three hours and wish they had more time, while others need a half day or a whole day to cover it. Many return in another season because the displays are different each time.

The entrance is wheelchair accessible, and there are accessible parking spaces and seating. Buying tickets in advance is recommended. Food is available at the island's cafes, or you can bring a light picnic.
