The Museum of Prague is on Na Poříčí in Nové Město, in a restored neo-Renaissance building devoted to the Czech capital’s history. Its permanent displays trace Prague from prehistoric times through the medieval and Baroque periods, with archaeological finds, films and interactive elements. The standout is Langweil’s detailed 19th-century model, which shows parts of the city before major later changes. Children have play areas, while the building and historical displays give adults plenty to explore too.

Langweil’s Model of Prague is the museum’s best-known exhibit. Made by Antonín Langweil between 1826 and 1837, the paper model depicts the Old Town, Malá Strana and Prague Castle before the large-scale changes made to the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its close detail lets you examine the historic city at a scale that maps and written accounts cannot provide.

The museum also displays the original calendar wheel from Prague’s Astronomical Clock, made in 1866, with painted panels by Josef Mánes representing the months. These objects sit within a wider collection that uses archaeological material, maps, documents and other artefacts to tell the story of Prague.

The permanent exhibitions cover Prague’s development from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages and the Baroque period. Archaeology forms a substantial part of the museum’s collections, alongside displays about the city’s social and urban history. Films and interactive elements add different ways to engage with the material; some interactive displays do not have English-language content.

The main building itself is a restored neo-Renaissance structure. Its exhibition spaces include permanent displays and rooms used for temporary exhibitions. Children can use play areas, and some activities invite them to take part rather than only view objects. The exhibits are detailed, so a visit can suit adults interested in the city’s history as well as families looking for hands-on stops.
