Rosenberg Palace

Rosenberg Palace stands within the Prague Castle complex, at Jiřská in Prague 1. Built in Renaissance style for the Rosenberg family, it later became an institute for noblewomen, providing care for impoverished aristocrats. Inside, look for the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, where trompe-l’œil paintings create the effect of architectural detail, and restored rooms furnished to suggest aristocratic life. Frescoes, tapestries and classical furniture add to the visit, though some rooms may be closed for restoration. It is easiest to include the palace in a Prague Castle visit.

From Renaissance palace to institute

Rosenberg Palace

Rosenberg Palace was built in Renaissance style for the powerful Rosenberg family in the late 16th century. It later became imperial property. In 1753, Empress Maria Theresa established an institute for noblewomen here, offering care to impoverished aristocrats. The institution accommodated around thirty women.

The palace was radically rebuilt in the 18th century, changing its original form. A major reconstruction from 1996 to 2007 restored parts of the building and its interiors.

Chapel and restored rooms

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is a principal stop inside the palace. Its trompe-l’œil paintings use painted details to create an illusion of depth and architectural form. Restored rooms also contain period furnishings, frescoes and tapestries. A recreated bedchamber and writing desk evoke routines such as reading, embroidery and correspondence.

Some rooms are sparsely furnished, and parts of the palace have been closed for restoration. The available displays can therefore vary. Check for closures before your visit, and consider the palace as one part of a wider Prague Castle visit.
