The Newport Railway Museum documents the development of Victoria’s rail transport system through locomotives, carriages and railway-related material. Its collection spans steam, diesel and electric trains, showing how rail technology changed as new engines and track systems were introduced.

The steam collection includes more than 15 locomotives that once operated in Victoria. They range from the compact F class to the H class, the largest locomotive to operate in the state. The engines give rail enthusiasts a chance to compare different sizes and designs in person.

Some locomotives and carriages can be explored from within. Among the carriages visitors have found interesting are a buffet car and a green wooden Overland sleeper. The collection also includes a Hitachi passenger carriage and electric locomotives, giving the visit a view beyond the steam era.

A model railway is another point of interest for children. The exhibits and vehicles suit a range of ages, whether you want to focus on the trains themselves or use the collection to introduce children to railway history.

The collection and its volunteers

Volunteers care for the museum’s trains, with restoration and cleaning work taking place on site. They can answer questions about the engines and the development of railways in Victoria, so leave time to talk as you explore.

The museum also holds railway history publications and an archive covering the early establishment of Victoria’s railway network. It is operated by the Australian Railway Historical Society and relies on donations to support restoration work. The museum is at 26 Champion Road in Newport, near North Williamstown station. Its listed public opening is Saturday from noon to 5 pm.
