At Federation Square in Melbourne, the Koorie Heritage Trust presents the art and culture of Aboriginal communities in south-eastern Australia. Its galleries bring together historical objects and contemporary work, with exhibitions that change over time. Look closely at the displays, including the drawers beneath some wall-mounted pieces, where additional objects are kept. You can also join a guided walk to learn about the area from a Koorie perspective. Entry to the galleries is free, and the adjacent shop sells work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and designers.

A centre for Koorie art and culture

Koorie Heritage Trust

The Koorie Heritage Trust is an Aboriginal cultural organisation based at Federation Square. Its work focuses on preserving and promoting the cultures of Aboriginal communities in south-eastern Australia. The centre brings art and cultural objects into public view, alongside exhibitions and programs that support cultural learning.

The Trust was established in 1985 after activists took action against the University of Melbourne and the Museum of Victoria to seek the return of Indigenous artefacts. Its collection and exhibitions connect that history of cultural preservation with contemporary Aboriginal art and design. The material on display includes works acquired by the Trust and works commissioned for its collection.

Objects, artworks and changing exhibitions

The galleries combine cultural objects with historical and contemporary artworks. Objects on display include items such as boomerangs, grinding stones, shields and spears. Exhibitions change over time, so the works and themes on view can differ between visits. Recent exhibitions have included work by Aboriginal painters and woodcarvers, as well as an exhibition centred on the Black queer community.

Take your time with the displays. Some drawers beneath wall-mounted works contain further pieces, so looking beyond the objects at eye level can add to the visit. The galleries occupy more than one level, with both permanent and temporary displays to explore.

Guided walks and local context

The Trust runs guided walks that share First Peoples’ perspectives on local history, language and culture. The Birrarung Wilam, or River Camp, walk focuses on the land around Melbourne and its significance to the local Kulin peoples. A guide can add context to what you see in the galleries and help connect the exhibitions with the surrounding area.

Heritage walks also cover cultural beliefs and ways of life. One walk described by participants was level and easy to follow, though people with hearing impairments may need to stay close to the guide because amplification is not used. Ask the Trust about current walk options before planning your visit.

The shop and supporting artists

The shop next to the Trust sells handcrafted work and designs from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, with a strong focus on artists and designers from southern Australia. Buying a piece there supports the people who made or designed it. The range includes locally made gifts, giving visitors a way to encounter contemporary work beyond the gallery displays.
