Sa Pa Stone Church

Sa Pa Stone Church stands on the central square of Sapa town, in the mountains of northwest Vietnam.

Sa Pa Stone Church stands on the central square of Sapa town, in the mountains of northwest Vietnam. The French built it during their colonial rule, and its walls and floors are made of local stone. Its Gothic design and tall bell tower sit in front of Ham Rong Mountain, so the church looks like a European parish in a mountain town. Inside, the interior is simple and solemn, with modest stained-glass windows. The church still holds Mass and local services. Stop here to see one of the few French-era buildings still intact in Sapa, then explore the markets, cafes and shops around it.

Who built it and why

The French built the church during their colonial rule over Sapa, which lasted from 1893 to 1954. Japanese forces occupied the town from 1940 to 1945. The church was built to serve the French who came to rest in Sapa and attended weekend Mass.

It is one of three significant buildings in Sapa that remain from the French period. The other two are the Hoang Lien Hotel and the main Sapa Tourism Information Centre. Local workers built most of it from durable stone.

Architecture and the interior

The church is known as the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, and it is also called the Holy Rosary Church or the Notre Dame Cathedral of Sapa. Its design follows Roman Gothic style, with arches, pointed roofs and a bell tower that rises about 20 metres. The walls, floors and bell tower are built from stone bonded with a mixture of sand, lime and molasses.

The site covers over 6,000 square metres. Behind a large yard stands a chapel with stained-glass windows. The interior is plain and quiet, which suits the services held here. The church was restored over the years, and its original architecture has been kept.

Mass, services and the square

The church holds Mass on Sundays and services at set times for local Catholics and visitors. It is also a place where Christmas is celebrated, and the festive decorations around the church are part of the season.

In front of the church is a small square. On Saturday evenings the square becomes a meeting place for ethnic communities, who hold a market with dance, singing and traditional practices. Here visitors can also dress in traditional clothes.

The entrance, restroom and seating are wheelchair accessible.
