Established in 1985, the Southern Women’s Museum preserves and presents the heritage of women in southern Vietnam. Its collections span clothing, jewelry, ceramics, bronze objects, books and photographs. The material relates to women from many parts of public and everyday life, including artists, writers, poets, journalists and women remembered for their contributions to the region.

The museum also has a role as a place for educational activities and cultural exchange. Its subject is not limited to wartime history: displays consider women’s lives, work and cultural traditions as well as their contributions to the region’s development.

Traditional clothing is a central part of the visit. Displays of áo dài and costumes show how dress differs among communities and regions. Some exhibits connect clothing with traditional craft, including weaving techniques associated with Đồng Nai. Other displays cover pottery and ceramics, alongside objects used in work and daily life.

Photographs and personal stories add context to the collections. Together, they show women’s experiences across different periods, from family and community life to education, creative work and public service. Look for the range of materials on display, rather than treating the costumes as a single collection of national dress.

Women’s roles during wartime

Several displays address the resistance wars against French and American forces and the part women played in them. Photographs, documents and objects relate to women who served in different capacities, including as fighters, organizers, politicians, diplomats and administrators. The exhibits also include stories of individual women and the effects of conflict on their lives.

This focus places women’s experiences alongside the museum’s wider account of southern Vietnamese culture and history. The displays honor women’s contributions to the defense and development of the region, while preserving material that can help visitors understand their varied roles.
