Thong Nhat Park, also called Reunification Park, is a large green space in Hanoi’s Dong Da district, south of the Old Quarter. Bay Mau Lake sits at its center, with Hoa Binh Island among the park’s quieter spots. Come for a walk or jog, watch local groups exercise, or bring children for rides and play areas. Lakeside cafes add a place to pause. The park is livelier on weekends, when families gather for picnics and children’s activities.

A park shaped by reunification

Thong Nhat means “Reunification.” The park was first named Lenin Park, then took its current name after North and South Vietnam were reunified in 1976. It was built in 1958, with contributions from Hanoi officials, workers and residents.

At about 50 hectares, it is one of Hanoi’s largest parks. Four major streets border the grounds: Le Duan, Tran Nhan Tong, Nguyen Dinh Chieu and Dai Co Viet. The park lies in Dong Da district, south of the Old Quarter.

Bay Mau Lake occupies the center of the park, with paths and trees around the water. Hoa Binh Island sits in the lake, surrounded by flower gardens and ornamental trees. It provides a quieter place to pause within the larger park.

The lake is also part of the park’s recreation. Boat rides are among the activities here, and swan-shaped pedal boats have been noted on Bay Mau Lake. The water’s edge is not fenced, so take care with children nearby.

Everyday life and activities

The park is used by people of different ages and for many kinds of outdoor activity. Joggers, cyclists and people exercising share the paths and open areas. Groups gather for tai chi, aerobics, dancing and meditation, while families spend time outdoors and children play.

Children’s amusements have included a toy train, a Ferris wheel, a mirror house and boat rides. The park also has playground areas and courts for sports. At weekends, family activities can include bouncy castles and buggy rides. Cafes by the lake offer a place to stop for coffee or ice cream, and stalls near the entrance sell snacks and clothing.
