Enid A. Haupt Garden

Behind the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall, Enid A.

Behind the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall, Enid A. Haupt Garden is a four-acre public garden with formal flower beds, winding paths, fountains and places to sit. Its three themed sections pair Victorian-inspired garden patterns with contemporary plantings, and the Castle’s red sandstone towers make a striking backdrop. Seasonal displays bring changing colors through the year, from magnolias in spring to roses in winter. Stop for a quiet walk between museum visits, or take time to explore the planting details and framed views.

The garden’s layout has three named areas: the Parterre, the Moongate Garden and the Fountain Garden. Together, they cover about four acres beside the Smithsonian Castle, between the building and Independence Avenue.

The grounds also sit above museum spaces, including the National Museum of African Art and the National Museum of Asian Art. Brick paths lead through the planted areas, where formal patterns meet newer seasonal displays. Fountains and benches give the walk a slower pace, with spots to sit among the beds.

Plantings through the seasons

The garden changes as its plants come into bloom. Magnolias are a spring highlight, with reports of flowering in March before the cherry blossoms reach their peak in early April. Annual flower beds are refreshed during the year, so the colors and arrangements change with the season.

A visit outside spring still has details to notice. White roses have been seen in December, and a Windmill Palm adds a tropical note to the planting. Along the garden’s west side, a less prominent stretch of tropical plants has benches set among the greenery.

The Castle as a backdrop

The Smithsonian Castle stands beside the garden, its red sandstone towers visible above the planting. Paths and open views create several angles for photographs, including the Moongate area and its circular structure. The garden is also a calm place to sit or take a break from the museums along the Mall.

Nearby, the Arts and Industries Building is another historic Smithsonian structure. Its exterior can be appreciated alongside the Castle, though both buildings may be closed to the public. The garden itself is wheelchair accessible at its entrance, and the site lists accessible parking.
