Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston is the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, at 1601 E NASA Pkwy in Houston.

Space Center Houston is the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, at 1601 E NASA Pkwy in Houston. See flown spacecraft and more than 400 space artifacts, explore hands-on exhibits about life beyond Earth, and walk inside the shuttle replica Independence, mounted on a shuttle carrier aircraft. Tram tours travel to sites at the working NASA complex, including historic Mission Control, astronaut training facilities and Rocket Park, home to a Saturn V rocket. There is enough to fill much of a day, especially if you take a tour.

Space Center Houston and Johnson Space Center

Space Center Houston is the public visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where Mission Control and astronaut training facilities are located. The two sites are connected by tram tours, which take visitors beyond the museum to selected areas of the working NASA complex. The visitor center opened in 1992 and has more than 400 space artifacts, along with permanent and changing exhibits.

The tram tour is a useful way to understand how the visitor center relates to the NASA site. Tours can include historic Mission Control, astronaut training areas and Rocket Park. Access to working facilities is limited for security reasons, so the tram route does not provide entry to every part of the complex. Check tour availability when planning your day.

Spacecraft, rockets and Independence Plaza

The exhibits bring together spacecraft and objects from different periods of American spaceflight. In the Starship Gallery, you can see capsules that have flown in space, along with equipment and training mock-ups. The collection also includes spacesuits and lunar material, including moon rocks that visitors can touch.

At Independence Plaza, the shuttle replica Independence is mounted on a shuttle carrier aircraft. Visitors can explore the shuttle and see the aircraft beneath it. Rocket Park adds a close view of a Saturn V, the large rocket associated with the Apollo program. These displays give the visit a physical scale that models and screen exhibits cannot convey.

Interactive exhibits for different ages

Living in Space explores practical details of life aboard a space station, including how everyday tasks change in microgravity. Children can try activities in Kids Space Place, including a lunar rover and Apollo command module tasks. Other hands-on displays cover spaceflight and astronaut training, so younger visitors can move between exhibits rather than spending the whole visit reading.

Adults and older children interested in NASA’s work can focus on mission history, spacecraft and the tram tour. The center also has films, live presentations and interactive consoles. With a large site and plenty to explore, families with preschool children may want to plan breaks and keep the walking in mind.

Planning your visit

Space Center Houston is at 1601 E NASA Pkwy, southeast of central Houston. Its exhibits, outdoor displays and tram tour span more ground than a quick museum stop, and a full visit can take much of the day. If the NASA sites are a priority, make the tram ride part of your plan rather than leaving it until the end.

There is a picnic area on site, so bringing food can give you a flexible break. If you expect to return more than once, compare the cost of an annual membership with individual admission before you go. The site is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
