Memorial Presbyterian Church

At 32 Sevilla Street in downtown St.

At 32 Sevilla Street in downtown St. Augustine, Memorial Presbyterian Church is a working church built by Henry Flagler in memory of his daughter Jennie Louise. Its Venetian Renaissance design draws on St. Mark’s Basilica, with a copper dome, terracotta decoration and carved mahogany details. Inside, look for the stained glass and organ, and visit the mausoleum where Flagler and members of his family are buried. The church is a worthwhile stop for architecture and local history; visitors can explore on their own or join a guided tour.

Henry Flagler built Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1889 in memory of his daughter Jennie Louise, who died following complications during childbirth. The sanctuary was dedicated in March 1890. Flagler, the son of a Presbyterian minister, gave the church, its land and a former parsonage to St. Augustine’s First Presbyterian congregation in exchange for the congregation’s earlier properties, where the city’s Municipal Building was later built.

The church is still a place of worship as well as a historic site. Its story connects Flagler’s family history and religious background with the development of downtown St. Augustine.

Architecture inspired by Venice

The church’s design takes inspiration from St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and is described as Venetian Renaissance. Its large copper dome is a prominent part of the building’s profile. Look more closely at the terracotta relief work and the carved mahogany details, as well as the stained-glass windows inside.

The building also brings together several architectural influences. Moorish elements include mosaic arches and tile work; Arabic lettering above a doorway has been noted for its resemblance to lettering at the Alhambra. These details reward a closer look at both the exterior and interior.

The Flagler family mausoleum

A mausoleum inside the church holds the remains of Henry Flagler, his daughter Jennie Louise, her infant daughter Marjorie and Flagler’s first wife, Mary. The memorial purpose is central to the building’s history, and the family burial site gives visitors a direct connection to the people commemorated here.

A visit can focus on the church’s architecture, its memorial history or both. Self-guided visits and guided tours are mentioned as options; check current availability before you go.
