Frye Art Museum is a free art museum at 704 Terry Ave in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. Its galleries pair 19th- and 20th-century European and American paintings with changing contemporary exhibitions, including work by local artists. The compact layout suits a relaxed visit, and the Frye Salon gathers paintings across its walls for a dense view of the founding collection. After the galleries, stop at the cafe or browse the gift shop for art cards, books, jewelry and hand-blown glassware.

A collection built for public access

The museum opened in 1952 to house the art collection of Charles and Emma Frye, Seattle residents who collected paintings and wanted them available to the public. The founding collection includes 232 paintings, with much of its work from 19th- and early-20th-century Europe and the United States. German art is a notable part of the collection, alongside works by American and French artists.

Painting and sculpture from these periods remain central to the museum. The collection includes representational works, including dramatic paintings by artists such as Franz von Stuck. Charles and Emma Frye’s collection has also grown through later acquisitions, so the museum presents more than the works gathered by its founders.

The Frye Salon and changing exhibitions

The Frye Salon arranges paintings closely across its walls, creating a room where individual works can be considered alongside one another. Give yourself time to take in the overall arrangement, then look more closely at the paintings and their frames. The crowded display differs from the more open feel of the museum’s other gallery areas.

Temporary exhibitions bring contemporary art into conversation with the historic collection. The museum has presented work by local artists as well as artists from elsewhere, with exhibitions spanning different media and subjects. Displays change, so the particular artists and works on view depend on your visit. Some exhibitions have included masks, video, sculpture and painting.

Planning a relaxed visit

The museum is on First Hill, at 704 Terry Ave. Its galleries occupy one floor, and the compact scale makes it possible to explore at an unhurried pace. If you want to look closely at both the founding collection and the temporary exhibitions, allow more time than a quick walk-through.

Backpacks need to be stored in a locker or left with an attendant before you enter the galleries. Staff can help with information about the exhibitions. The cafe has an outdoor seating area, and the gift shop sells items such as cards, books, jewelry and hand-blown glassware. Admission is free.
