La Jolla Recreation Center

La Jolla Recreation Center is a neighborhood park and community facility at 615 Prospect St in La Jolla, San Diego. A community center designed by Irving Gill

The recreation center opened in 1915 and was designed by Irving Gill. Its creation was funded by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, and it has served as a gathering place for the La Jolla community across generations.

Gill’s architectural approach is associated with plain walls, straight lines and rounded arches. The recreation center is one of his designs in La Jolla; the La Jolla Woman’s Club is another.

Activities and community events

The grounds include basketball courts, tennis courts and three play areas for children of different ages. Swings, climbing equipment, grass and shaded areas give families options beyond court sports. Picnic tables and bathrooms are also available.

Programming has included movie nights, multicultural festivals, Halloween and Easter activities, pancake breakfasts and petting zoos.
