The Philadelphia Museum of Art Steps rise to the museum’s east entrance at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Known as the Rocky Steps, the 72 stone stairs became famous in the 1976 film, and the bronze Rocky statue below them is a popular photo stop. Climb to the top for a view along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward City Hall, or take a breather on the steps and watch people make the ascent. The art museum is just beyond the staircase, with collections spanning paintings, sculpture, photographs, armor and decorative arts.
Why the steps are called the Rocky Steps

The staircase became famous in the 1976 film Rocky. In the movie, boxer Rocky Balboa runs up the 72 stone steps as part of his training, then raises his arms at the top. The scene turned the museum entrance into a well-known Philadelphia stop and a place where visitors recreate the run for photos.
A bronze statue of Rocky stands near the bottom of the stairs. Sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg made it for a later Rocky film. After debate over placing a film character beside an art museum, the city installed the statue permanently near the steps in 2006.
The view from the top

At the top, look down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward City Hall. The broad sight line is a good reason to pause after the climb, whether you want a cityscape photo or simply a moment to catch your breath. The steps also give you a place to sit and watch people heading up and down.
For a quieter visit, one travel account recommends going near sunrise. The museum’s Friday evening opening is another option if you want to combine the outdoor landmark with time inside; the evening program can include performances, drinks and food.
Adding the museum to your visit
The steps lead to the east entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The museum was completed in 1928 and holds more than 240,000 objects, including paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, sculpture, armor and decorative arts. Its galleries are arranged by periods and, in some cases, by style. Labels provide information about artists, places of origin and dates.
There is also a west entrance, so check your route if you are heading directly inside. Once in the museum, you can use stairs or elevators to move between floors. Audio and guided tours are available, and the building has dining options, a cafe and gift shops. On Fridays, the museum stays open later than on its other open days.
