At 194 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, the International Tennis Hall of Fame tells the story of the sport inside the historic Newport Casino. Its galleries pair tennis clothing, rackets and other memorabilia with interactive displays, video and a holographic presentation featuring Roger Federer. Outside, you can walk the seven-acre grounds and see the manicured grass courts at Bill Talbert Stadium. The site suits casual visitors as well as tennis fans, with exhibits that trace the game from its early history to the modern era.

The Newport Casino and early American tennis

The Hall of Fame occupies the Newport Casino, a shingle-style building designed by McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1880. Despite its name, the Casino was a social and sporting complex, not a gambling venue. It once held club rooms and facilities for recreation, and its seven-acre property formed part of Newport’s social life during the Gilded Age.

Newport’s place in American tennis history began in 1881, when the first U.S. National Lawn Tennis Championships were held here. That competition later developed into the U.S. Open. The Hall of Fame was established in 1954, and the building continued its connection to tennis as a place to preserve the sport’s history and recognize its players and contributors.

The site’s story spans more than the careers of famous champions. Its exhibits also bring attention to people who helped shape the game, including Althea Gibson, the first African-American player to compete at the U.S. National Championships, in 1950. The collection includes an 1874 patent from Queen Victoria for lawn tennis, a reminder of the game’s early development.

What to see in the museum

The museum’s galleries bring together more than 1,900 objects, with displays arranged around the history and development of tennis. Look for historic rackets and other equipment, trophies, photographs and clothing worn by players. The exhibits include items associated with figures such as Serena Williams and Roger Federer, placing personal sporting objects alongside the wider history of the game.

Interactive elements add moving images and interpretation to the collection. Touchscreen kiosks provide information, while video highlights show notable matches. A holographic theater presents Roger Federer, and an Arthur Ashe virtual-reality experience is also part of the museum’s attractions. The range of objects and media gives visitors different ways to follow the sport’s history, whether they come for its champions, its equipment or the evolution of play.

Plan to look beyond the first displays. The galleries cover tennis from its early forms through the present, and the video selection gives the visit another dimension after you have seen the artifacts. The museum also has a shop with tennis-related merchandise.

Courts, events and the grounds

Outside the museum, Bill Talbert Stadium and its grass courts are among the site’s defining features. The broader grounds include a number of tennis facilities, with grass, hard and clay courts as well as indoor courts. Members of the public can arrange court use in advance; a grass-court booking is listed at $250 per hour, with white clothing required. Check the booking details before making plans.

The Hall of Fame Open brings tournament tennis to Newport in July. If you visit during the event, you can combine time at the museum with watching matches, though tournament-day admission may cost more. Dates and ticket details are not included here, so check the venue’s website before travelling.

The grounds are also open for a walk, even if you do not plan to play. The recently restored Casino Theatre is part of the historic site, and the manicured courts provide a view of the venue’s continuing sporting use. Parking is paid, and extra service fees may apply; check the terms when you park.
