The mill and West Maui's sugar industry

A sugar mill was established in Lahaina in 1861 and later became known as Pioneer Mill Company. As large sugar plantations expanded, sugar production grew into West Maui's primary industry, and Lahaina developed from a quiet town into a plantation community.

Sugar cane fields once covered broad stretches of the area. Processing the cane produced a sweet, burning smell and smoke that became part of local life. The smokestack is a surviving marker of that industrial past.

The 225-foot smokestack has been restored as a monument. Outdoor exhibits include equipment and vehicles used by the sugar company, among them locomotives, old train cars and pieces of mill machinery. Plaques explain the work of harvesting and processing cane, giving context to the objects around the grounds.

The site is free to visit. Engraved donor bricks around the smokestack provide another detail to explore as you walk through the exhibits.
