Mohave Point is a west-facing overlook on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park, known for views of the Colorado River and the deep cut of the canyon. Several viewing spots give you different angles on the cliffs, buttes and, if you look closely, rapids far below. The western light brings out changing colors and shadows, especially around sunset. Mohave Point can be a quieter alternative to nearby Hopi Point, with room to pause and take photographs.

Views over the Colorado River

Mohave Point
Mohave Point

Mohave Point looks west across the Grand Canyon. From its overlooks, the Colorado River is visible far below, along with sections of rapids including Salt Creek, Granite and Hermit. The river’s course and the steep canyon walls make the depth of the landscape especially clear.

Look across the formations for buttes and mesas, including the Battleship. The Abyss, a deep indentation in the canyon wall, is another distinctive feature in the view. Different outcrops give you slightly different perspectives, so take time to look around rather than stopping at just one spot.

Changing light on Hermit Road

The overlook’s west-facing outlook makes it a popular place to watch the sun go down behind the canyon’s cliffs and plateau. As the light shifts, the walls take on changing colors and shadows. The river and rock formations can look different from one viewing spot to another, giving photographers a choice of foregrounds and angles.

Sunrise is another time to see the canyon’s changing light. For sunset, arriving at least 45 minutes before the posted time gives you a chance to choose a place to watch. Light can continue changing after the sun has set.
