Lookout Studio is a 1914 stone building on the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, just west of Bright Angel Lodge. Architect Mary Colter shaped its uneven roofline and rough stone exterior to echo the canyon’s rock formations. Step onto the viewing decks for canyon views, or look through the telescopes on the terrace. Inside, the shop carries photographs, postcards, books, jewelry and crafts by Native American artists. It’s a convenient stop on the Rim Trail, with Kolb Studio nearby for a more art-focused visit.

Mary Colter’s stone design

Lookout Studio

Lookout Studio was built in 1914 as a place to photograph and observe the Grand Canyon. Architect Mary Colter designed it for the edge of the South Rim, using stone and timber to connect the building visually with its setting. The irregular roofline and masonry recall the shapes of the canyon walls.

Colter drew on Indigenous architectural forms, including Puebloan dwellings found in the region. The building’s rough stone exterior gives it the appearance of an old structure set into the rim. Its position beside the canyon is part of the design: the building and the rock edge seem closely joined.

Lookout Studio has upper and lower viewing areas, with outdoor terraces facing the canyon. Telescopes on the terrace let visitors look more closely at the landscape. The views also take in the Bright Angel Trail below, and the cliffside can be a place to watch for California condors.

The studio is in Grand Canyon Village, just west of Bright Angel Lodge and close to the Rim Trail. It sits near other historic buildings designed by Colter, so the stop fits naturally into a walk through the village. Kolb Studio is a short walk along the rim trail.

Inside the studio

The building now combines an observation point with a shop. Inside, you can find Grand Canyon photographs, postcards, books and souvenirs, along with jewelry and crafts made by Native American artists. The shop is a practical place to browse for a small memento; visitors looking for a more focused art experience can continue to Kolb Studio.
