Hermit Trailhead

Hermit Trailhead is on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park, near Grand Canyon Village.

Hermit Trailhead is on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park, near Grand Canyon Village. The trail descends into the canyon on a wilderness route with loose rock and gravel underfoot, and views open across the canyon along the way. It is a more demanding choice than the paved Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails, but brings a quieter hike and a chance to see the canyon from the trail. Hermit's Nest, a souvenir shop with a rustic log-cabin feel, is also at the trailhead.

Trail conditions and the return climb

Hermit Trailhead
Hermit Trailhead

The Hermit route is a wilderness trail, with a loose surface rather than the paved footing on Bright Angel and South Kaibab. Rocks and gravel require care, particularly on the way down.

Plan your turnaround with the climb back in mind. A conservative estimate is to allow twice as long to ascend as you spent descending. Water and snacks are useful on longer outings, and walking poles can help on the steep sections.
