The Grand Canyon, in northern Arizona, is a vast canyon carved by the Colorado River. On the South Rim, you can take in its red and orange rock layers from nearly two dozen viewpoints, with different angles across the canyon and toward the river. The overlooks and trails give you options for a short stop or a closer look on foot. Grand Canyon Village adds historic buildings to explore. After dark, the park’s official Dark Sky Park status makes stargazing another reason to stay.

How the canyon took shape

The canyon’s oldest igneous and metamorphic rocks formed almost two billion years ago. Layers of sedimentary rock lie above them, and the Colorado River gradually cut through those layers to form the canyon visible today.

The tilted layers of the Grand Canyon Supergroup, formed about one billion years ago, can be seen from Desert View Drive and at the Yavapai Geology Museum.

South Rim viewpoints

The South Rim has close to two dozen viewpoints, each with a different perspective. Some look deep into the canyon toward the Colorado River. Many overlooks sit where rock formations project into the canyon, creating broad sightlines for viewing and photography.

The viewpoints run from Hermits Rest in the west, past Grand Canyon Village, and east toward Desert View. This stretch gives you several places to stop and compare views.

Grand Canyon Village and the night sky

Grand Canyon Village has historic buildings, lodges and shops. Among its landmarks are El Tovar, built in 1903; Bucky O’Neil Cabin, built in 1890; and Verkamp’s Curio, built in 1906.

The park received official Dark Sky Park status in 2019 after work to bring more than 5,000 light fixtures into line with international dark-sky requirements. The designation makes the night sky another part of a visit beyond the rim and trails.
