Clyfford Still Museum

The Clyfford Still Museum in Denver’s Golden Triangle is devoted to the work of American abstract expressionist Clyfford Still.

The Clyfford Still Museum in Denver’s Golden Triangle is devoted to the work of American abstract expressionist Clyfford Still. Its nine galleries trace his development from early representational work to large, vivid abstractions, with archival material adding context about his life and career. The restrained concrete building, designed by Brad Cloepfil, gives the paintings space to command attention. Allow about an hour to explore the galleries, then look into the museum’s small shop. Tours can add context if you want to learn more about Still’s work.

How Still’s work changed

Clyfford Still was part of the first generation of American Abstract Expressionists. His work moved from representational subjects toward abstraction, using vivid color, jagged shapes and broad areas of paint. The galleries present this development in chronological order, so you can see changes in his approach across different periods of his career.

The museum holds paintings as well as drawings, prints and other works on paper. Large canvases give Still’s shapes and colors room to unfold, while smaller works offer another view of his process. The collection is extensive, but only a selection is on display at a time. Exhibitions change during the year, so a later visit can present a different group of works.

The collection and its archives

Still wanted his work to remain together in a permanent museum devoted to its care and display. His will offered the collection to an American city prepared to meet those conditions. Denver was selected in 2004, and the museum opened to the public in 2011.

Alongside the artwork, the museum holds material connected to Still’s life and career, including journals, sketchbooks, photographs and letters. Historical photographs and objects from the archives help place the paintings in context. Displays about his biography and career add detail beyond what can be read from the canvases alone. The museum also has a research center focused on the history and art of the period in which Still worked.

Architect Brad Cloepfil designed the museum specifically to display Still’s work. Concrete is a prominent part of the building’s interior, while natural light reaches the galleries through perforated concrete ceilings. The restrained setting keeps attention on the paintings and gives their scale, color and surface room to register.

The building has nine galleries, as well as two outdoor atriums connected to gallery areas. Visitors can also see into the art storage facility and conservation lab, offering a glimpse of the work involved in caring for a collection. Take time to look at the surfaces and layout of the building as well as the art; both shape the visit.
