MassArt Art Museum is operated by the Massachusetts College of Art and Design as a teaching museum. It presents temporary exhibitions rather than works from a permanent collection. That means each display brings new work into the galleries, spanning different artists and media.

The museum opened in 2020 after the college renovated its Bakalar & Paine Galleries. The space occupies part of a campus building originally built in 1906. Its two gallery spaces are moderately sized, giving the museum room for exhibitions that range from individual works to larger installations.

Exhibitions change over time, so check what is on view before planning around a particular artist or artwork. Past shows have included installations, painting, video, textiles and objects connected to the history of reproduction and motherhood. The subjects and materials can vary widely from one exhibition to another.

The museum’s exhibitions include work by artists at different stages of their careers, alongside work connected to the college. Its role as a teaching museum also links the galleries to MassArt’s work with the next generation of artists.
