Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary is a private nature preserve on the slopes above Kailua-Kona, about a 15-minute drive from Kona International Airport. Guided botanical walks lead through a cool, moist forest of native koa and ʻōhiʻa, bamboo, orchids and towering tree ferns. Guides explain the ecosystem, reforestation work and the plants and birds found here, including endangered species such as the nēnē. The sanctuary also hosts sound baths, and its peaceful setting suits families as well as nature lovers. Choose a guided walk to learn about the forest as you explore.

A forest shaped by elevation

The sanctuary sits more than 3,000 feet above sea level on the slopes above Kona. Its cool, moist conditions support a tropical cloud forest, a distinct environment from the coast below. The climb uphill brings a change in climate as well as plant life.

On a guided botanical walk, you can see native koa and ʻōhiʻa alongside palms, orchids, ferns and more than 100 varieties of bamboo. Some tree ferns grow to around 30 feet. The forest is also home to native and introduced birds, including the Hawaiian hawk and honeycreepers; sightings are not guaranteed.

Guided walks and other experiences

Guides introduce the plants and ecosystem along the walking route and explain the sanctuary’s reforestation efforts. The visit is a chance to learn about the delicate forest environment while moving through it on foot. The terrain can be damp and slippery, so sturdy footwear is useful.

The sanctuary also offers sound baths, including experiences led by Nadara Rose. For a more personal visit, ask about private group tours. Families can bring children to explore with them, while the guide shares information about the forest.
