Kīholo State Park Reserve is a coastal park on Hawaiʻi’s Big Island, reached from Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. Its black-sand shoreline and rocky lava terrain make the walk along the coast part of the visit. You may spot sea turtles, and the ocean can also be used for snorkeling, canoeing, kite surfing and sailboarding. The route in is bumpy, so allow for a slow drive and bring sturdy shoes, water and sun protection. The reserve’s gates close at 7pm.

The coast combines black sand with stretches of exposed rock and lava. Walking north along the shore leads toward the Bali house, a route visitors have taken from the parking area and back.

Sea turtles are sometimes seen along the coast. The ocean also draws people for snorkeling, fishing, diving, canoeing, kite surfing and sailboarding. Conditions matter: a strong surf break can make entering the water hazardous.

The road to the reserve is uneven, with ruts in places, and the drive can be slow. Some visitors have parked where the road became difficult and continued on foot. Parking is limited, so a larger vehicle may help with the rough approach, but it does not remove the need to drive carefully.

There are eight campsites, and reservations open 30 days ahead at midnight. There is no water at the camping area. The gates lock at 7pm, so plan your return before then.
