Papakōlea, also called Green Sand Beach, is near Naalehu and South Point on Hawaiʻi’s Big Island. Olivine crystals from the nearby volcanic cinder cone give the sand its green tint, most visible when you look closely at the grains. The coastal walk brings views of cliffs, lava rock and blue water before a steep descent to the shore. You can hike roughly 3 miles each way or arrange a ride in a local 4WD vehicle. Waves can be strong, so treat swimming with care.
Why the sand is green

Papakōlea’s green grains are olivine, a mineral found in volcanic rock. The nearby Puʻu o Mahana cinder cone supplied olivine that erosion and ocean waves carried into the beach. The sand mixes with darker grains, so the green can look subtle from a distance. Look closely at the shore and at individual grains to spot the crystals.
Papakōlea is counted among only four green sand beaches in the world. Its unusual colour comes from the volcanic material itself, not from vegetation or water. The beach sits near South Point in the Kaʻū district.
The route to the shore

From the parking area, the coastal walk is roughly 3 miles each way. The route follows the coastline for much of the way and crosses exposed, rugged ground. Views of the cliffs and ocean are part of the journey, but there is little shade and no water along the route. Bring enough water and food for both the walk and your time at the beach, along with sun protection and sturdy footwear.
A local 4WD ride is another way to reach the beach if you do not want to make the full round trip on foot. Conditions on the route are rough. Download an offline map before you set out because cell service is unavailable in the area.
At the beach
A short, steep descent leads from the top down to the shore. The beach is enclosed by cliffs, with black lava rock, green-tinged sand and clear water below. Take time to look at the olivine grains up close; their colour can be easier to see in the sand than across the whole beach.
Waves can be large, and swimming conditions are not always safe. Check the surf before entering and be especially careful with children. If the water is rough, enjoy the view from shore or cool your feet at the water’s edge.
