St Dogmaels Abbey was founded in 1120 by the Tironensian Order, whose Welsh presence is described as unique. Its surviving buildings show several stages of construction. The tall walls of the nave date to the 13th century, while the north transept was added in the 16th century.

Look for the vaulted crypt at the east end, an unusual feature among Welsh abbeys. Medieval floor tiles remain visible in parts of the ruins. The site is extensive, though much of the original abbey has been lost over time.
