A castle with a legendary past

Narberth Castle

Narberth Castle is associated with Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed, a figure from the Welsh Mabinogion stories. The earliest written mention of the castle dates to 1116, though Welsh mythology places an ancient palace here earlier.

The surviving fortress is medieval. Accounts link it to the Glyndŵr Rising, when it remained in Welsh hands, and to the English Civil War, after which it was slighted by Oliver Cromwell’s forces. The site’s information boards provide context for the remains.

The castle is currently closed to visitors because of safety concerns. Barriers restrict entry, so do not go beyond them. The ruin can be difficult to identify from the street, and its entrance beside a house is easy to overlook; the closure means there is no reason to search for a way inside.

A scale model at Narberth museum gives a better sense of the castle’s former form. The remains are also close to the town’s independent shops, making the castle part of a wider stop in Narberth.
