Dubai Museum is set inside Al Fahidi Fort in Bur Dubai, a defensive building dating to 1787. Its galleries trace the emirate’s development from a fishing, pearling and trading community to the modern city. Life-size scenes recreate homes, mosques, souks and date farms, while displays cover desert and marine life. Look for historic objects including boats, weapons and musical instruments, with some archaeological finds dating to the third millennium BC. The fort and the surrounding Al Fahidi area make this a useful stop for understanding old Dubai.

Al Fahidi Fort and its past

The museum occupies Al Fahidi Fort in Bur Dubai, near Dubai Creek. Built in 1787, the fort is considered the oldest existing building in the city. Its thick walls and courtyard give the visit a sense of the building’s earlier purpose as a place of defence. The fort also served as a residence for rulers, a weapons store and a prison before it became a museum.

Dubai’s first museum opened here in 1971, with the site later restored and the museum expanded. The building’s history is part of the visit: the courtyard includes a full-size dhow, a reminder of the boats used for trade and travel along the coast.

    Scenes of life before oil

The galleries use life-size dioramas to bring everyday settings into view. Recreated scenes include traditional Arab homes, mosques, souks and date farms, alongside depictions of desert and marine life. A walk-through display recreates an old market and uses sound and smell as part of the scene.

These displays give a sense of work and home life in Dubai before oil transformed the economy. Pearl diving, fishing, date farming and trade are among the occupations and activities represented. Look for details in the recreated buildings, including the palm-leaf house and its traditional wind tower.

    Objects, trade and archaeology

The museum’s collections include objects connected with daily life and local crafts, such as musical instruments, weapons and pottery. Displays also cover goods traded through Dubai and items linked to Asian and African trading connections. The mix of objects and reconstructed settings helps place the city’s growth within a longer history of settlement and exchange.

Some archaeological finds date to the third millennium BC. Interactive displays and audiovisual material add context to the galleries, while explanatory plaques are available in several languages. The exhibits are arranged across multiple rooms, so the fort’s modest exterior does not indicate how much there is to see inside.
