SALT Galata is a cultural centre in Karaköy, housed in the former headquarters of the Imperial Ottoman Bank. Its galleries host exhibitions on contemporary art, architecture and social history, while SALT Research has specialist publications and archival collections. The building is worth exploring in its own right: look for its grand staircase, pale arches and patterned floors, then take in the views towards the Golden Horn and historic peninsula. Entry is free, and the library, bookshop, café and restaurant give you reasons to stay beyond a quick look at the galleries.

A former bank in Karaköy

Salt Galata

SALT Galata occupies the former headquarters of the Imperial Ottoman Bank on Bankalar Caddesi in Karaköy. French-Levantine architect Alexandre Vallaury designed the building for the bank in 1892. Its original purpose gives the site a link to the city’s financial history, while its present role brings research and cultural programmes into the same rooms.

The building was adapted for its current use by architect Han Tümertekin. As you move through the interior, look for the grand staircase, high ceilings, pale arches and checkerboard flooring. Natural light reaches into the building, and the upper levels provide views towards the Golden Horn and Istanbul’s historic peninsula.

Exhibitions and research

SALT Galata presents exhibitions and projects related to contemporary art, architecture, design, and social and economic histories. Its programme is research-based, and the subjects change, so the galleries can feel quite different from one visit to another. Check what is on before setting aside time specifically for an exhibition; the size and scope of the displays are not fixed.

SALT Research brings together publications and archival collections. The public specialist library has periodicals on architecture and contemporary art, as well as seating for reading or study. A selection of rare books is kept in a separate private space. The institution also has an auditorium used for architecture- and art-related talks, seminars and screenings, along with spaces for workshops and other activities.

Spaces to explore

The former bank building now brings together exhibition areas, the research library, a bookshop, a café and a restaurant. Robinson Crusoe 389 has a smaller branch here. Neolokal is also based in the building and serves customers after hours, according to the available venue information.

There is no admission fee, so you can look around the public areas without committing to a full gallery visit. If an exhibition is not your main reason for coming, the architecture, library and views still give the visit a clear focus. The building is also used for cultural programmes, including workshops and events connected with art and architecture.
