Hagia Triada, also known as the Holy Trinity Church, was built in 1880 and is still used by Istanbul’s Greek Orthodox community. The name means Holy Trinity in ancient Greek. The church stands on land that had previously held a Greek Orthodox cemetery and hospital.

Set close to Taksim Square in Beyoğlu, the church sits behind high garden walls. Its position near the square and İstiklal Street places a working place of worship beside one of the city’s busy central areas.

The church was designed on a Greek-cross plan and built of stone. Its central dome rises above a drum with a ring of tall windows. The exterior draws on Neo-Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles, and two Gothic-style bell towers flank the building.

From outside, look up at the dome and the bell towers before entering. The building’s restrained stone exterior gives way to a more detailed interior.

Inside the church

The interior is richly decorated, with an elaborate iconostasis, oil paintings, marble work and religious objects. Icons and painted details draw the eye through the worship space, while the inner dome adds another area to examine.

Hagia Triada remains a place of worship, so keep your visit quiet and follow any directions given inside. Photography is not permitted indoors. Easter decorations and Christmas celebrations can bring a seasonal dimension to the church; check whether a service or event is taking place before planning around one.
