Beside Topkapı Palace in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district, Gülhane Park is a public garden with shaded paths, flower beds, fountains and old trees. It was once part of the palace grounds; today, its benches and cafés make it an easy place to pause between nearby sights. In spring, tulips add bright colour to the gardens. Walk towards the park’s far end for views across the Bosphorus, and look for the Roman-era Column of the Goths among the paths and monuments.

From palace garden to public park

Gülhane Park

Gülhane Park occupies part of the grounds associated with Topkapı Palace. In the Ottoman period, it was an outer garden of the palace, with groves and flower gardens. The name is commonly translated as “Rose House” or “House of Roses,” recalling the garden’s floral associations.

The grounds later became a public park. Gülhane’s position beside the palace gives a walk here a different feel from a visit to the city’s enclosed historic buildings: paths and green spaces sit just outside the palace complex, with the older streets of the historic peninsula close by.

The Column of the Goths is one of the park’s notable historical monuments. This Roman column, dating to the third or fourth century, commemorates a Roman victory over the Goths. It is a good reason to look beyond the flower beds and trees as you walk through the grounds.

Another landmark connected with Gülhane’s history is the announcement of the Tanzimat Edict in 1839. The declaration was an important Ottoman reform. The park’s former role as palace grounds and its later public use place imperial and civic history within the same setting.

A walk through the gardens

Tall plane trees shade paved walkways, while benches, fountains and flower beds provide places to pause. The gardens change with the seasons. Tulips are a spring highlight, but the paths and mature trees remain part of the park’s appeal outside the flowering period.

The park stretches towards the waterfront, so continuing along its paths can bring views of the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. Cafés in the grounds provide a place to stop for a drink. Gülhane is also close to the Archaeological Museum and Topkapı Palace, making it straightforward to include a green-space break in a day spent around the historic peninsula.
