Galata Bridge

Galata Bridge crosses the Golden Horn between Eminönü and Karaköy, linking Istanbul’s historic centre with Beyoğlu.

Galata Bridge crosses the Golden Horn between Eminönü and Karaköy, linking Istanbul’s historic centre with Beyoğlu. Walk the upper deck for views across the water and a close look at the anglers lining the railings. Below, the lower level holds seafood restaurants and cafés, where you can pause for a fish sandwich. The bridge is especially atmospheric around sunset, when ferries pass beneath it and the city’s mosques and Galata Tower frame the skyline. It is an easy way to move between two busy districts on foot.

Galata Bridge

Galata Bridge connects Eminönü, near the Spice Bazaar and New Mosque, with Karaköy in Beyoğlu. The Golden Horn separates these districts, and crossing the bridge on foot is a direct way to move between the historic centre and the neighbourhoods on its northern shore.

The bridge has occupied an important crossing here since the 19th century. An early version was built of wood in 1845, and successive bridges replaced or altered it over time. The present structure opened in 1994. Earlier versions were rebuilt after changes to the city’s transport needs and, in one case, a fire.

Two levels, two different views

The upper level carries road traffic and has pedestrian walkways. From here, look across the Golden Horn towards the city’s skyline, including Galata Tower and the mosques on the historic peninsula. Anglers stand along the railings with their rods over the water, a familiar part of the bridge’s daily scene. Ferries and other boats move beneath the crossing.

Stairs lead down to the lower level, where cafés and seafood restaurants line the water’s edge. This is the place to sit for a meal or snack and watch the activity on the Golden Horn from below. The contrast between the fishing lines overhead and the restaurant tables below gives the bridge much of its character.

A walk at dusk

As daylight fades, the water and skyline change colour, and the silhouettes of mosques and Galata Tower become especially noticeable. The bridge draws people stopping to watch the evening light, take photographs and observe the anglers. After dark, city lights reflect on the water as ferries continue to pass underneath.

The bridge is also part of the city’s cultural life. It has appeared in Turkish literature and theatre, and its fishermen and fish-sandwich restaurants have become recurring images of Istanbul. A walk across takes only a short time, but stopping to look from both levels turns the crossing into a fuller visit.
