Phuket Big Buddha is an active Buddhist site on Nakkerd Hill in Karon, above Chalong and the beaches of Kata and Karon. Its 45-metre seated statue is clad in white Burmese marble, and the hilltop grounds have views across Chalong Bay, Phuket Town and the southern coastline. Walk around the statue and viewing areas, and take time for the quieter temple atmosphere. Dress with your shoulders and knees covered, and check access before setting out, as closures have affected visits.

Officially called Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Eknakiri, Phuket Big Buddha sits on Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata. The seated statue is 45 metres tall and covered in white Burmese marble. Its scale is easiest to appreciate from the grounds nearby, where you can also examine the marble surface and details of the monument.

The hilltop location gives the site its wide outlook across southern Phuket. From the viewing areas, the scenery includes Chalong Bay, Phuket Town, Kata and Karon. On clear days, views extend along the coast and towards islands off the bay.

A place of worship

This is an active Buddhist religious site as well as a landmark. Its atmosphere includes the sound of small bells and Buddhist music, and the grounds are used by people who come to pay their respects. Take a quiet, considerate approach while walking around the complex.

Modest clothing is expected: cover your shoulders and knees before entering. If your outfit does not meet the dress expectations, a cover-up may be available at the entrance. Treat the space as a place of worship, not only as a viewpoint.

Getting there and planning your visit

The approach climbs a steep, winding road, so factor that into your journey if you are prone to motion sickness. A car or scooter can make getting up the hill easier, but plan how you will leave as well: arranging a return ride in advance can help, since pickups at the top can be hard to find. If using a ride-hailing service, agree on the return arrangement and price beforehand where needed.

Some visitors walk uphill, but the climb is steep. At the top, the grounds take about an hour to explore. There are steps between viewing levels, so allow time to move around at your own pace. The area can be hot in daytime sun; bring water. Monkeys may be nearby, so keep food and loose belongings secure.

Access has been affected by closures, so check whether the site is open before travelling. Late afternoon is one option if you want to visit as the air cools and watch the light change over the coast.
