Em resumo

Stay in Tonsai Village if you want the ferry pier, restaurants and nightlife within walking distance, in Loh Dalum Bay for a calmer swim near the village, on Long Beach for snorkeling and quiet, and at Laem Tong for a resort stay away from the crowds. There are no cars on Phi Phi Don, so the walk or boat from the pier to your bed decides the choice.

How to choose

Ko Phi Phi is a small island with a big reputation, and where you sleep decides whether it feels like a lively beach town or a quiet cove. The Ko Phi Phi travel guide covers the island as a whole; this page settles where to base yourself, and how that choice fits into a wider Thailand trip. The main question is how far you want to be from the ferry pier and the village.

There are no cars on Phi Phi Don, the larger of the two islands. You arrive at Tonsai Pier, and from there you walk, ride a handcart for your bags or take a longtail boat to the beaches around the island. That makes the distance from the pier more important than on most islands, and it is the first thing to check before you book. A room that looks close on a map can mean a sandy trail with a heavy suitcase, or a boat ride that only runs at set times.

Three things decide the choice. The first is noise: Tonsai Village has bars and beach parties in high season, and rooms near the main lanes can be loud late into the night. The second is the beach itself, since Tonsai Bay is a working harbor, Loh Dalum is calmer, Long Beach has good snorkeling and Laem Tong is quiet but far from restaurants. The third is the day-trip crowd, because boats from Phuket and Krabi arrive in late morning and leave by mid-afternoon. A base outside the village means you see the island without them.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple guesthouse or fan bungalow, $$ is a mid-range hotel or air-conditioned bungalow, $$$ is a resort. Rates swing between the high season, roughly November to April, and the rainy months, so treat the bands as a guide and check current prices at booking. If you are still deciding whether to stay at all, read Ko Phi Phi day trip or overnight.

Tonsai Village is the island's center, built on a narrow strip between two bays. The ferry pier, the main lanes of restaurants and bars, dive and tour desks, minimarkets and the trail to the viewpoint are all within a few minutes on foot. It suits first-timers, short stays and anyone arriving or leaving on an early or late boat, because you can walk to the pier.

It is also the easiest place for day trips. Boats to Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Monkey Beach leave from here, and you can book tours at a desk the evening before. If you plan to visit the viewpoint at sunset, you can start on foot from Tonsai without a boat. For ideas on what to do, see our Ko Phi Phi travel guide.

The compromise is peace. The beaches near the village are small and crowded between late morning and mid-afternoon, and bars play music into the night in high season. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the main lanes, or choose Loh Dalum or Long Beach instead.

Evite se you want a quiet room or you go to bed early. Long Beach or Loh Dalum suits you better.

2. Loh Dalum Bay

$$–$$$

Loh Dalum Bay is the long, sheltered bay on the north side of Tonsai, and it is where many visitors head for a swim and a sunset drink. The water is calmer than at Tonsai Bay, and the beach has beach bars and restaurants in high season. It is a short walk from the village, so you keep most of the convenience while sleeping a little further from the pier.

It suits couples, families and anyone who wants a beach on the doorstep without going to a remote bay. The pace is relaxed during the day, but in the busiest months beach bars can play music late, so the quiet is relative. A room with a sea view and air conditioning is worth paying for in the hot months of March and April.

The trade-off is the same as in the village: the beach fills in the middle of the day, and the line between a relaxed bar and a party can change from one week to the next. Ask your accommodation about noise before you book.

Evite se you want complete quiet at night. Long Beach or Laem Tong suits you better.

3. Long Beach

Long Beach, also called Hat Yao, is the long sandy beach on the east side of Phi Phi Don, reached by longtail boat from the pier or on foot along a sandy trail. The reef starts close to the shore, so you can snorkel from the sand, and the beach is far quieter than Tonsai once the day boats have gone.

Stays are bungalows and small resorts, with a handful of beachfront restaurants rather than a village. It suits couples, snorkelers and travelers who want to spend evenings on the sand rather than on the main lanes. Visit the viewpoint and Tonsai by day, and come back by boat or trail at sunset.

The cost of quiet is logistics. Longtail boats run on a schedule and prices depend on the time of day, the trail can be hard in rain and heavy bags are a problem. Choose a soft bag, travel light and arrange your pickup with the accommodation before you arrive.

Evite se you have heavy bags or want a wide choice of restaurants at night. Tonsai Village suits you better.

Choose Long Beach for snorkeling and quiet evenings, if you travel light.

4. Laem Tong

Best for
Resort stays, honeymoons

Northern tip, quiet
Price band
$$$

Laem Tong is the northern tip of Phi Phi Don, with a few large beachfront resorts and a long view across the sea. It is the choice for honeymooners, travelers who want a pool and a spa, and anyone who would rather not see the village at all. After about four in the afternoon the area is calm, with few day-trippers.

Resorts here usually arrange boat transfers from the pier, and some run their own shuttle in high season. Evenings are quiet, and you will probably eat at your resort or take a boat into the village for dinner. That suits a relaxing stay, but it is less flexible than a base in Tonsai.

The cost is distance. You depend on the resort's boat schedule, the trail is long, and dinner options are limited. Check transfer times, and whether a late boat back from the village is included, before you book.

Evite se you want to walk to restaurants and bars. Tonsai Village or Loh Dalum Bay suits you better.

Splitting your stay between two bases

For three nights or more, two bases can work better than one. A common split is one or two nights in Tonsai Village for the viewpoint, the markets and the tour boats, then one or two nights on Long Beach or at Laem Tong for snorkeling and quiet. That gives you two different moods without much extra travel, because longtail boats link the beaches in minutes.

Moving costs a morning, so keep it to one move. Check-out is usually mid-morning and check-in mid-afternoon, which leaves a gap that is easy to fill with a swim or a walk to the viewpoint. Ask your first hotel to hold your bags, and book the longtail with your next accommodation so the price and the time are clear.

Accommodation types vary by area. Tonsai has guesthouses and mid-range hotels in the lanes, Loh Dalum has beachfront bungalows, Long Beach has simple bungalows and a few small resorts and Laem Tong has larger resorts. If you plan to snorkel every day, choose a bungalow close to the reef, and if you want a pool, check that it is open in the rainy season, when some resorts reduce services.

Finally, check what the room includes before you compare prices. Resort rates may include breakfast and boat transfers, while a cheap bungalow may charge extra for the boat and for air conditioning. The cheaper listing is not always the better deal once you add transport, so read the cancellation terms too.

Booking tips

Book early for the high season from roughly November to April, and especially for Christmas, New Year and the Chinese New Year weeks. In the rainy season, from about May to October, you will find more choice and lower prices, but some bars, restaurants and resorts close, and the sea can be rough enough to cancel ferries. Keep a spare day before any flight, and read our guide to getting around Thailand for ferry and transfer options.

Ask about the pickup. For Long Beach and Laem Tong, a boat or porter at the pier saves a long walk with bags, and some hotels include it. If you arrive on a late ferry, check that the boat to your beach still runs, or book your first night in Tonsai and move the next morning. Add an eSIM before you land, because signal drops in some bays and you will want maps and messages working at the pier.

If you are flying in from outside Thailand, remember the Thailand Digital Arrival Card and the visa-exempt stay for your passport. Our Thailand entry rules page explains both, and it is worth reading before you book a long island stay.

Perguntas frequentes

Where is the best place to stay on Ko Phi Phi?

Tonsai Village for a first, short stay, because the pier, restaurants and tour desks are on foot. Choose Long Beach or Laem Tong instead if you care more about quiet and snorkeling than about being near the nightlife.

Is it better to stay on Ko Phi Phi or visit as a day trip?

Stay at least one night if you can. Day-trip boats arrive in late morning and leave mid-afternoon, so the beaches and viewpoint are far quieter at dawn and dusk. A day trip is fine if you only want Maya Bay and snorkeling.

Is Tonsai Village too noisy for sleeping?

The main lanes can be loud until late, especially in high season. Ask for a room on a back street or upper floor, or choose Loh Dalum or Long Beach if you sleep lightly.

How do you get luggage to Long Beach or Laem Tong?

By longtail boat from the pier, or on foot along sandy trails in some cases. Ask your accommodation about the pickup, and travel with a soft bag rather than a hard suitcase.

Are there cars on Ko Phi Phi?

No. You walk, use handcarts for bags and take longtail boats between beaches. That is part of the appeal, but it also means distances on foot and by boat matter more than a map suggests.

When should you book Ko Phi Phi accommodation?

Book early for December to February and for Christmas and New Year. In the rainy season, from about May to October, choice and prices are easier, but some places close and ferries can be cancelled.
